Overview

Paul Lipp and Reto Leuthold (both *1977), are the artist duo Lipp & Leuthold, which deals in its artistic work with painting, drawing, graphics and sculpture.

The exhibition entitled "Ask all you like but don't ask why" presents the duo as part of DESSIN, a joint exhibition project of 16 cultural institutions of Central Switzerland on the theme of drawing, in the KALI Gallery. The line, which balances on the narrow boundary between media, is firmly anchored in the work of Lipp & Leuthold.

While working together on a painting, the artist duo superimposes pictorial ideas, which are then added to, painted over, and renewed in the next steps of the process. Their work is intuitive and impulsive. The work is accompanied by a constant dialogue between the artists. Fragments from a wide variety of influences are woven together in order to push the boundaries of their own ideas.

Lipp & Leuthold engage not only in painting and drawing, but also in monotype, silkscreen, sculpture, and site-specific installations. For the exhibition at KALI Gallery, the artists present their latest work in large-scale acrylic and spray paintings based on drawing principles that also serve as backgrounds for monotypes. A Painting within a Painting. Unlike their work in painting, where artists layer, overlay and work spontaneously, monotype requires a systematic and organized approach.

Sculptures complete the exhibition; they are lines of wire and silicone that float in space and carry the drawing into the room. The works are installed in the exhibition in such a way that viewers can see a

composition becomes visible to the viewers.

Through numerous solo and group exhibitions, they have made a firm name for themselves in the Swiss art scene, most recently with the publication of "I Licked the Yellow Suit of the Sun" and the associated solo exhibition at the Lucerne Art Museum in 2021.

Paul Lipp and Reto Leuthold live and work in Lucerne (CH).
